Nod's Trans Pyrenees Ultra Cycling Challenge
30 September 2022 to 7 October 2022

I will be taking part in the 1,500km Trans Pyrenees ultra distance cycling event, starting on 30 September, raising funds for Erase Meso, a charity that is close to my heart.

The Trans Pyrenees is a self supported ultra distance cycling event, with riders racing 1,500km from the Bay of Biscay to the Balearic Sea and back again. We’ll race through some of the most spectacular, remote (and mountainous!) scenery, with more than 37,000m of climbing (the equivalent of four Mount Everests!).

Erase Meso was set up by our friends Paul and Jill Cook, after Paul was diagnosed with mesothelioma (asbestos cancer) in 2017. The charity is raising funds to research a cure for mesothelioma.

The UK has the highest incidence of mesothelioma in the world with around 5000 deaths per year. That's more than 13 people dying every day. It is estimated that there will be 50,000 to 60,000 new cases by 2050 in the UK alone.

Mesothelioma is caused by exposure to asbestos. Despite being banned in the UK in 1999, asbestos can still be found in many homes, schools, and hospitals. A recent BBC inquiry found that nine out of 10 NHS hospitals still contain asbestos.

This devastating disease kills a similar number of people to other cancers, such as skin cancer, yet investment into research is severely underfunded. Finding new and effective treatments is absolutely crucial if we are to save thousands of people who are at risk of developing mesothelioma.

In memory of Katherine Williams.

My wonderful friend Katherine, who I met on my first day of university and remained great friends with for over 30 years, died of mesothelioma in August 2019 at the age of 49. Not a day goes by when I don’t think of her and the fun times we shared and the major life events we supported each other through. She was the loveliest, kindest, most positive person you could ever hope to meet and I’m doing this for her and to help others like her who have been exposed (probably unknowingly) to asbestos.

After cancellations (Covid) and a deferral (fear!), I'm excited to be running the London Marathon 2022 for Erase Meso, a small charity dedicated to;

1. Raising funds for asbestos cancer research
2. Raising awareness of mesothelioma
3. Providing hope for mesothelioma sufferers

I'd be incredibly grateful if you could sponsor my running efforts. If you donate you'll be contributing to much needed research for a cure.
ANY contribution will help fund a cure - or at least a way of managing mesothelioma...

THANK YOU very much - any money you give goes straight to mesothelioma research - as Erase Meso is a charity run exclusively by volunteers.

Best wishes, Nicky x

Andrea (aka Andi) took part in the Eton Dornay Triathlon for Erase Meso because it's a charity close to her heart

Event: Eton Dornay Triathlon, on 25 September 2022

"I'm taking part in my first triathlon this September for Erase Meso. A charity close to my heart that is looking for a cure to mesothelioma, better known as asbestos cancer.

I know times are hard, so any donations are greatly received.

Thanks

Andrea"

She raised over £1000!

Nina's London-Edinburgh-London
Cycle Challenge

Nina's Story

My biggest challenge yet:  I will be riding 1520km (944miles) with 13295m elevation (43618 ft) in 5 days from London to Edinburgh (LEL) and back to London from 7th to 12th August 2022.
LEL only takes place every 4 years. It's not a race, but I only have 125 hours to cover an average of 304 km and 2659m of climbing each day with little sleep. There are 13 control points where the organisers provide hot meals, showers, and blankets (think smelly, snoring cyclists!).

LEL is said to be a test of ones mental and physical resilience and while I'm on the road and will have to dig deep, I'll be thinking of my friends Paul Cook and Nigel Shaddick who defy all logic and keep living, challenging themselves and seeking out adventures on a daily basis. They both live life with absolute gusto and have no idea what an endless source of inspiration they are to me!

Paul and Nigel both have mesothelioma, which is a dreadful terminal cancer caused by exposure to asbestos dust and fibres. The cancer usually develops in the lining that covers the outer surface of the body's vital organs. Prognosis is poor, there is NO CURRENT CURE and treatments are limited. The UK has the highest incidence of mesothelioma in the world, with more than 5000 people diagnosed each year.  And while research and access to clinical trials are improving, Asbestos cancer research is UNDERFUNDED in the UK.

Which is why, Paul and his wife Jill started their own charity called Erase Meso after Paul was diagnosed in 2017 at the age of 43. Erase Meso works with a team of experts and has been instrumental in raising awareness, raising hope and raising critical funds for research to help find a cure.

I would be so grateful for your support, which will ensure I'll be following Paul's and Nigel's lead in NEVER GIVING UP and to keep going when the going gets tough. Please also take a look at the Erase Meso website to read about their work and Paul's and Nigel's story. Raising awareness is our first priority.

Nightrider London
June 11-12th, 2022

Nightriders for Erase Meso in 2022 raised awareness of mesothelioma, asbestos cancer and had the most unforgettable night out in 2022.

The Fundraising Event

We took to the historic streets of London with 50 or 100km routes to choose from – both of which take in some of the capital city’s most iconic landmarks – under the night sky.

Both routes took us past many of London’s most famous landmarks. Highlights include Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, Tower Bridge, Piccadilly Circus, Trafalgar Square, the London Eye and Buckingham Palace...all in the name of mesothelioma/asbestos awareness
